About the event

The Romans at Newstead: old and new archaeology at Trimontium. The site at Trimontium, on one of the main routes running through southern Scotland, was one of the longest lasting focii of Roman activity in Scotland. It has also been the subject of repeated archaeological activity, including the major excavation of James Curle from 1905 to 1910. However, it would be wrong to suggest that this means that we fully understand this complex site. Recent community archaeology carried out by the Trimontium Trust has included fieldwalking, geophysics and systematic metal detecting, as well as extensive work on the archives of previous phases of fieldwork. This not only gives new insights into the Roman presence but also into later activity in the fields at Newstead and even into the archaeology of 100 years ago. It also raises questions about the ongoing threats to our heritage.
