This lecture will present the results of archaeological excavations carried out by Wardell Armstrong LLP at Marshall Meadows, near Berwick-upon-Tweed, as part of the 2021 power supply upgrade for the East Coast Main Line, a project managed by VolkerRail Ltd on behalf of Network Rail. Situated about 200 meters from the modern sea cliffs of Marshall Meadows Bay, the site occupies a naturally defensible location. Excavations uncovered significant remains of a Late Iron Age and Romano-British settlement, providing valuable insights into the region’s history.


The use of advanced analytical methods, including archaeobotany, radiocarbon dating, and lipid residue analysis, has enriched our understanding of the site’s chronology and the economic practices of the inhabitants. By placing Marshall Meadows within the broader archaeological context of the Tyne-Forth region, this lecture will explore the interaction between the indigenous communities and the Roman presence in northern Britain, offering a fresh perspective on the current…
