Susan Mills was born in Newcastle upon Tyne and grew up in South Shields. She has a BA in English and Related Literature (York) and an MA in Anglo-Saxon and Viking Studies (Durham). She spent most of her career as a museum curator, managing the collection and many aspects of the development of what became Bede's World in Jarrow from 1986 until 1999. She was Clackmannanshire Council's Museum and Heritage Officer from November 1999 until September 2017, when the Council deleted the service.  She now looks after the Heritage Collection on a voluntary basis, while seeking a long-term solution for its care. She was involved with Clackmannanshire Heritage Trust throughout her career in the county and became a Trustee in 2017.
