About the event
Professor David Breeze will be speaking at the Berwick Literary Festival at 2pm on Saturday 10th October. The title of his talk is A Chainsaw Massacre: recovering from the felling of a tree.
The felling of the tree in Sycamore Gap in 2024 led to a world-wide outpouring of grief. Eighty archaeologists, including several BAS members, came together to offer comfort in the form of a book in which each described their favourite place on Hadrian’s Wall. A second book, also edited by David Breeze, about trees along Hadrian’s Wall and their history, followed. David Breeze is a British archaeologist, teacher and scholar of Hadrian’s Wall, the Antonine Wall and the Roman Army.
This lecture is sponsored by the Border Archaeological Society and is to be held in the Salvation Army Hall, Church Street. Tickets can be bought (£10.00) via the Berwick Literary Festival website or the Maltings box office.
